Money, Spirituality and Human Capital

At the end of February I finished writing my first book. It took a couple weeks before officially publishing it, during which time the world started changing on a daily basis. Fast forward to the middle of March and I published a book on money, while friends and family were losing jobs, having their small businesses shuttered or severely minimized. In one way I thought the theme of the book was even more relevant now then when I started writing in January, but something didn’t feel right.

I’ve watched over the last two weeks as fear and panic set in for many. I was not immune, as my own mind engaged in thoughts of doubt and worry. I found myself frozen and falling out of my morning routine. The morning routine has been the one thing that had grounded me and filled me with love, gratitude and peace. It is my own unique spiritual practice. I forgave myself and began anew this week. Our own unique practice of spirituality and connection with others, can and will sustain us in these unprecedented times.

I share this with you because, while money is an important tool used in life, it is not enough amid strife and lack. We need those who are able and blessed with abundance to share and connect with others intentionally. I am one of those people and I was not helping in a meaningful way. We are separated from each other physically like no other time in recent memory. I believe now more than ever it is about more then the actual money that humanity needs. We need hope and kindness infused into the exchange of our money.

I’m talking about human capital. I became energized this week and committed to making a difference in my local community. We have little control over what happens on the larger playing fields of government and corporations, but we can uplift those in our local communities. I challenge everyone who is blessed to have a job and income, to give intentionally, in your local community. Tip more, pay more, shop more, give more and do it locally. Feel it when you pay, when you give, and send it on with love.

I just finished reading a wonderful book on money called “Happy Money” by Ken Honda. In his book Ken talks about the energy money can have when it leaves you intentionally and from a place of happiness. In the coming weeks, the challenges will come, but there is no greater duty then to serve, to give and uplift others. Put an extra charge of abundance and love into your money when you pass it on. Ignite happy money into your local community.
